# Quickstart

You need a public documentation site. Private or login-protected documentation is not supported.

:::steps
### Create a project

Sign in to the dashboard and create a project. Give it a name and add the origins of the sites that will show the assistant, for example `https://docs.example.com`. Docora only answers requests that come from these origins.

Copy the **public project id**. It starts with `pk_` and is safe to put in your page.

### Add your documentation

Add the address of your docs as a source, for example `https://docs.example.com`. Docora indexes the pages under that address and stays on the same site. You can limit the crawl with include and exclude patterns and a maximum page count.

Indexing runs in the background. The source shows `ready` when it is searchable. After that, Docora re-syncs on a schedule and skips pages that have not changed.

### Add the script

Paste this before `</body>` on every page that should show the assistant:

```html
<script
  src="https://widget.docora.dev/loader.js"
  data-project="pk_your_public_id"
  async
></script>
```

### Ask a question

Open your site and click **Ask AI**. Try a question your docs answer, one they do not, and one in another language.

## Using the API instead

Everything the dashboard does is available over HTTP. See the [API reference](/api) and [authentication](/api/authentication).
